Why should I use the Moso Bag?

Many conventional air fresheners contain dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde, petrochemicals, p-dichlorobenzene and aerosol pollutants. We created the Moso Bag as a safe and natural alternative. Plus, it lasts much longer (two years!), saving you a lot of money.

What’s in the bag?

There is just one ingredient inside the Moso Bag- 100% Moso Bamboo Charcoal. We make our bamboo charcoal out of one of the highest quality bamboos in the world- Moso Bamboo. Moso bamboo is a species of giant timber bamboo native to China that grows to 55 feet and up. Like most bamboo, Moso quickly grows into full maturity in just 5 years. We get ours from a farm in China’s Fujian Province. The process of converting the bamboo into bamboo charcoal begins with cutting down the bamboo (it then grows back). The cut bamboo is dried for a few weeks, and then treated in a kiln at 750°C for two weeks to create the charcoal. Moso bamboo charcoal has millions of tiny little pores and cavities that work together to act like a big sponge. As air passes by the Moso Bag, the bamboo charcoal has a slight ionic charge that attracts particles. This charge traps odors, harmful pollutants and moisture particles inside of the pores of the bamboo charcoal. Once the pores have filled up, which takes about a month, it is time to rejuvenate the charcoal in the sun so that the Moso Bag has more space in its pores to absorb pollutants.

Why is bamboo charcoal better than regular charcoal?

Bamboo charcoal is simply a better all-around product. Regular charcoal is made from normal trees (not bamboo) so it takes decades for the trees to grow back once they are cut down. Moso Bamboo is a grass and grows back to full maturity in 5 years, making it more sustainable. Regular charcoal production pollutes the air, whereas bamboo charcoal is a carbon neutral process. Bamboo charcoal is more porous (about 10 times), so you need a lot less of it to cover a much larger space.

What material is used for the outside of the Moso Bag?

The exterior bag is made of linen, a fabric derived from the flax plant.

Do I need to activate the Moso Bag when I take it out of the packaging?

Nope! The Moso Bag is sealed inside the packaging, unable to absorb anything until it is opened. Just take the Moso Bag out of the package and place directly in your desired space.

How long does it take for the bag to work?

It begins working immediately after you open the plastic packaging. Because it doesn’t give off a scent like an air freshener, it can be difficult to know if it’s working right away. But you’ll know soon. In just a few days, you will notice major improvements. Within a week, odors will be completely neutralized.

How do I rejuvenate the bag?

Once a month, place the Moso Bag outside in the sun for at least one hour. It can be cold or cloudy; the bamboo charcoal inside just needs exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Try flipping over the Moso Bag occasionally so all of the bamboo charcoal can rejuvenate.

I really don’t get a lot of sun where I live; do I have to put it outside?

The Moso Bag does not need heat to rejuvenate, only UV rays. While strong sun may make the rejuvenation process faster, the UV rays on cold (and even cloudy) days should be enough to refresh the Moso Bag. One days with less sun or heat, try leaving the Moso Bag out for longer than 1 hour. You can never over rejuvenate the Moso Bag. If taking the Moso Bag outside is really not an option, try placing it on a sunny windowsill (window open or closed). The window may block out essential UV rays for rejuvenation but it is better than nothing. Do not put the Moso Bag in the oven or microwave. If you live somewhere that doesn’t have much sun, know that the Moso Bag will last for more than 30 days without sun, and in some cases as long as 90 days. However, you’ll get the best performance when you put it in the sun every 30 days.

Can I rejuvenate it in the oven?

No. Please do not put the Moso Bag in the oven, microwave or any other heating device. It needs UV rays, not just heat to rejuvenate.

I left my Moso Bag in the rain; is it ruined?

It may not have that fresh, out-of-the-package look but it is not permanently damaged. Simply place the bag in the sun to let it dry out. Once it’s dry, the charcoal will begin to work again.

Why does the bag only last for two years?

The Moso Bag works by adsorbing pollutants from the air and temporarily storing them in its’ pores until rejuvenation. Once placed outside in the sun, the UV rays release and disintegrate the pollutants. Some of the more serious toxins, such as formaldehyde, can leave a very small amount of residue behind in the pores. This builds up over time, making the Moso Bag less effective at absorbing particles out of the air. Sometimes the bag can last more than two years; you will have to be the judge of that.

Can the bamboo charcoal be recycled?

Absolutely! Bamboo charcoal is an amazing product. After two years as an air purifier, the bamboo charcoal makes a wonderful addition to your garden, where it promotes plant growth and completes its lifecycle as a product that comes from the earth and ultimately gives back to the earth.

Where is the best placement for the Moso Bag?

It depends on the bag’s size and purpose. It is best to put the bag in fairly open areas where air can pass through – it’s not good to tuck it away or place it underneath things (unless, of course, you’re using it for a gym bag or hamper – but when you’re placing it in a room or a car, you want to have air circulation around the bag). You do not have to hang the Moso Bag, unless you find it more convenient to store it that way. Placing it on a table is enough. The Moso Bag can be placed on absolutely any surface or material.

Will one large Moso Bag cover several rooms that are connected?

For best results, use separate Moso Bags for each space of your home. Even if, for example, your kitchen and living room are technically one room, it is best to place one Moso Bag in each area.

Is the Moso Bag safe around pets?

Yes! The Moso Bag contains one ingredient only – bamboo charcoal – which has no chemicals or toxins, making it completely safe to use around pets and children.

Is the Moso Bag cruelty free and vegan?

Yes it is! We do not use animal byproducts and we do not test the Moso Bag or any of its’ components on animals.

Where is the Moso Bag made?

The Moso Bag is made in the Fujian province of China where Moso bamboo grows best.

Aren’t we taking away a food source from pandas?

Absolutely not! Moso Bamboo is very wide, dense and has no leaf growth on the first 15 feet of the stem. Pandas eat arrow, black, and water bamboo that is lower to the ground and more accessible to the roots, shoots, and leaves.
